At George Peabody we offer an array of exciting after-school electives. The course offerings are based on parental input. Every semester new classes are added to meet the needs of our school community!
The George Peabody Parent Teacher Association sponsors our after-school elective program and provides funding to subsidize the cost of running the courses. Scholarships are provided in order to provide all students the opportunity to participate in our after school electives. [updated 1/08].

Coach Drew will teach students a variety of athletic skills and team sport games, rules and skills.
Chess Class $110
Mondays
Grades K-5
This will be our third year working with instructors from Academic Chess. Class participants will experience the innovative teaching methods of Academic Chess. This class is designed for everyone from beginner to the advanced player. Attendees will learn the basic principles behind the opening game, middle game tactics/objectives, and endgame strategies. Learning this ancient game, participants will develop patience, foster critical thinking skills, and understand the connection between decisions and consequences. The one-hour class is broken into half hour instruction on a 2- dimensional demonstration board, followed by a half hour of supervised playtime.
Music Class $100

This class is based on Orff Schulwerk, an approach to music education which actively involves children in music, using games, dance, and drama as well as musical performance.
The children in this class will sing, dance and play games with music. They will also learn to play simple pieces on the recorder, which is an excellent introduction to other wind instruments. Curriculum will include musical concepts such as rhythm, beat, pitch, and form; some music reading and writing; appreciation of classical and world music; and science concepts involving the relationship between vibration and sound.
Margaret Thrupp, B.Mus., M.A. (Elementary Education.) has taught flute, recorder, and classroom music both here and in Australia. Currently she is employed as a preschool teacher in the Sunset, as a flute teacher, and as a professional flautist. Previously, she has played in the Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra, and has appeared as a soloist at Carnegie Hall.
Piano $125

This course is run by Keyboard Educators of San Francisco. The one-hour per week class meets for ten weeks. The course is geared for beginners through intermediate. All materials and supplies are furnished. All class participants share one piano. Please call 665-2290 with any questions about this class. This is a non-PTA sponsored class.

Reenie Charriere is a Visual Artist and a Dancer, who has been a teaching artist in the Bay Area for the past 7 years. She has been an Artist in residence at George Peabody Elementary School since 2004. She also works with Young Audiences of Northern California as well as the ALICE project in Oakland
She emphasizes the endless possibilities in art. Her projects are based upon observations from the real world as well as explorations in imagination, including studies of contemporary art. She gives students a chance to explore a variety of styles and techniques in drawing, painting as well as sculpture. She is currently working on her MFA in Visual Art at Maine College of Art in Portland, Maine.
Kickball $20

Students will have the opportunity to play lots of kickball! For 90% of our students this is THE favorite recess activity. Students will have the opportunity to improve their skills, solidify their understanding of the rules and strategies, and perhaps compete in games against kickball teams in neighboring schools.
Yoga $100

Erika Lam is a Holistic Health Practitioner who has been studying Yoga for 15 years. Teaching Yoga has naturally spilled over into parenting her two children, age 7 and 4, whom she practices Yoga with at home. She has witnessed numerous benefits of Yoga in her children's lives that range from building self-esteem to having more restful sleep. Practicing Yoga poses help children build strength and coordination, while creating new awareness about their growing bodies. This one-hour class includes storytelling, singing and dialogue to stimulate the children's imaginations and to create enlivening movement experiences that will enhance their health, communication and learning.

SF Guitar School provides guitar instruction to beginning and intermediate students. Students will learn to play simple songs while learning to read music. Students will also learn basic chords which will be applied to familiar songs. Patient and knowledgeable guitar teachers provide instruction.
K/1 Sports $100

This exciting weekly sports program will offer organized, non-competitive and age appropriate sports and movement for children in Kindergarten and First grades. The program's emphasis will be on having fun and the goal is to inspire enthusiasm in young children about fitness and movement. The sports will include but are not limited to soccer, basketball, tee ball, tennis, basic cardio exercises, yoga and stretching. Weather permitting the program will be held outside, at Mountain Lake Park or on the campus playground, rainy day classes will be held in a campus classroom.

Science Enrichment with Tree Frog Treks strives to create critical thinkers who will work to save, preserve and maintain our planet's biodiversity by introducing them to live rescued reptiles and amphibians, offering fun, hands-on science and art programming, and exploring nature.
