4th & 5th Grade Girls Basketball 2008

The Peabody Basketball Team is off to a great start again this year. Half way through our second season the roster has reached ten girls and we are looking forward to improving the skills of our newest players. Last Thursday Peabody faced off against a strong Grover Cleveland squad made up of some very tall girls. Our goals for the night were to keep our defense strong, rebound and pass well. We did all three and kept running the whole game. Our experienced fifth grade players continued to show a lot of poise and improvement by looking for passes before shooting and keeping the ball moving away from the defense. Our newer fourth grade players are showing great potential; they've got their arms up on defense, are not afraid to dribble the ball or take a shot.

Sports4Kids Night Court Basketball is a non-competitive, supportive atmosphere that allows young student athletes to become comfortable playing the game without the pressure of keeping score. We routinely remind students that "if you're having fun, you're already winning."

Beginning in February Sports4Kids and George Peabody will begin their second season of Co-Ed Volleyball. This sport is open to all  boys and girls in the 4th and 5th grades. It is a non-competitive, supportive league that allows our young athletes to gain experience on the volleyball court. Last year we had six players who all had a great season. By the end of the schedule every player on the team was capable of bumping, setting and serving the ball over the net. So far none of our players have been able to spike the ball, but we're working on that.

To help develop our young Volleyball players we have an after school program one day a week devoted to working on volleyball skills. Although being in the program is not necessary to play on the team, it is an excellent opportunity to practice skills and gain experience in the game. See the After School page for more information.

The three standing rules of our league are

  1. Play Hard
  2. Respect the Game
  3. Have Fun

If you're interested in joining the Girls Basketball team (we have two roster spots left), the Co-Ed Volleyball team, or the Volleyball After School Program, please email Coach Drew <drewcoach@gmail.com>.
