Visual Thinking Strategies
George Peabody | Visual Thinking Strategies
October 2007

We've started a new program, here at George Peabody, that incorporates art and higher-order thinking.

Every month all of our teachers lead their classes in a Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS) lesson.

VTS is a visual arts program for elementary school students that uses art to teach thinking, communications skills, and visual literacy. Students' growth is stimulated by three things: looking at art of increasing complexity, responding to developmentally-based questions, and participating in carefully facilitated group discussions.

VTS encourages

  • a personal connection to art from diverse cultures, times, and places
  • confidence in one's ability to construct meaning from art
  • active class discussions and group problem solving
  • development of thinking and communication skills
  • development of writing skills
  • transfer of these skills to other subject areas
